Hard Water in Setubal: Special Treatment

By Equipa ManutencaoPiscinas6 min read

Introduction

If you have a pool in Setúbal, Palmela or Azeitão, there is a good chance you have seen this: a whitish line at the waterline that comes back weeks after being removed, a heat-pump exchanger losing efficiency year after year, or a pH that stubbornly climbs no matter how much reducer you add.

It is not poor maintenance. It is hard water.

Water hardness — the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium — varies a great deal within the South Bank itself, and the Setúbal and Palmela area is among those with the highest readings. That changes how a pool is treated in concrete ways: products behave differently, equipment wears faster, and there is one parameter most owners have never measured.

This article explains how to recognise the problem, what to measure, how to treat it, and what to do so it does not come back.

What Hard Water Means in Practice

Calcium hardness is measured in mg/L (equivalent to ppm) and the working range in a pool is 200 to 400 mg/L.

Calcium hardnessClassificationWhat happens in the pool
Below 150 mg/LSoft waterThe water "seeks" calcium: it attacks grout, concrete and gelcoat
200 to 400 mg/LWorking rangeBalanced: neither deposits nor aggression
400 to 600 mg/LHardDeposits at the waterline, in the filter and in heat exchangers
Above 600 mg/LVery hardVisible precipitation, recurring cloudiness, loss of equipment efficiency

The surprising part: very soft water is as problematic as very hard water, only the damage stays invisible for longer. In Setúbal and Palmela the problem is almost always the other extreme.

How to Recognise the Problem

Five signs, in order of frequency:

1. A white line at the waterline. Calcium carbonate deposit. It comes off with a scale remover and comes straight back if the cause is not treated. It is the most common sign and the easiest to ignore.

2. Surfaces rough to the touch. Run your hand along the wall in the shallow end. If it rasps, that is bonded scale, not dirt.

3. Cloudiness that appears after the pH or the temperature rises. Water saturated with calcium precipitates when the pH climbs. Milky cloudiness appearing out of nowhere on a hot day, with no chlorine shortage and a filter in good order, is typically mineral precipitation.

4. A pH that climbs on its own and resists correction. Frequently combined with high alkalinity. We cover that in How to Balance Pool pH.

5. A heat pump or salt cell losing efficiency. Scale settles where there is heat and where there are electrodes. It is the highest cost and the quietest one.

What to Measure, and How Often

A strip kit does not measure calcium hardness reliably. You need a specific hardness test, or a laboratory analysis.

ParameterRangeFrequency in a hard-water area
Calcium hardness200 to 400 mg/LMonthly, and always after topping up with fresh water
pH7.2 to 7.6Weekly
Total alkalinity80 to 120 mg/LMonthly
Temperature—At every measurement, because it affects precipitation

In Setúbal and Palmela, the measurement to take before any other is of the mains water you fill with. If the fill water already comes in hard, the pool's hardness climbs with every evaporation top-up — and in summer, evaporation is significant.

💡 Dica Profissional

Measure the hardness of the tap water you fill with, once, and write the figure down. It is a number that does not change much and it explains almost everything that happens to the pool over the year. Owners in Azeitão or around Palmela are usually surprised.

Treatment: What Works

If hardness sits between 400 and 600 mg/L

Manageable without dilution, with three measures at once:

A calcium sequestrant (chelating agent). Keeps calcium in solution instead of letting it precipitate. Applied regularly, typically monthly, and it is the backbone of treatment in hard water.

pH at the low end of the range. 7.2 to 7.4, not 7.6. The lower the pH within the acceptable band, the lower the tendency to precipitate.

Alkalinity at the low end. 80 to 100 mg/L rather than 120. High alkalinity with high hardness is the combination that precipitates.

If hardness passes 600 mg/L

Here the sequestrant is no longer enough. The only real correction is dilution: partial drain and refill with less hard water. It feels counter-intuitive in a hard-water area, because the replacement water is hard too — but it still reduces the accumulated concentration.

Never fully drain a pool without checking the water table and the type of construction. An empty pool can suffer structural damage.

Removing existing deposits

Scale already bonded to the surface does not come off with a sequestrant. It is removed mechanically or with a specific scale remover, and the procedure depends on the lining. We detailed that in Removing Limescale from Pool Walls.

Equipment in a Hard-Water Area

This is where hard water genuinely costs money, and where almost nobody looks.

Heat pump. The exchanger is the hot point of the circuit, so it is precipitation's preferred spot. A thin layer of scale measurably reduces heat transfer: the pump runs more hours for the same result. Checking and cleaning the exchanger belongs in the annual plan, not in the "when it stops working" plan.

Salt chlorinator. The titanium plates accumulate scale and lose chlorine output. Many cells have a self-cleaning cycle through polarity reversal, and in hard water that cycle may not be enough. Periodic manual cleaning with dilute acid solution, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Sand filter. Scale cements the sand into blocks, creating preferential channels: water runs through the channels instead of crossing the filter medium. The symptom is a pool that will not clear with an apparently normal filter pressure. See When to Replace Filter Sand.

Solar heating. Panels and collectors with narrow sections block faster in hard water than any other component.

Prevention, Through the Year

SeasonHard-water-specific action
Opening (March-April)Measure hardness after filling. Set the sequestrant dose for the year
SummerpH at the low end. Monthly sequestrant. Watch for cloudiness on very hot days
Evaporation top-upsEvery top-up raises hardness. Record how many were done
OctoberMeasure hardness at the end of the season: it is the year's highest figure
WinterThe right moment to clean the exchanger and the salt cell

Common Mistakes

Treating the white line as dirt. Brushing does not fix scale. It returns within weeks.

Raising alkalinity "to stabilise the pH" in hard water. It makes precipitation worse. In hard water, keep alkalinity at the low end.

Shocking the pool with high hardness and high pH. A shock raises the pH momentarily and can precipitate the whole pool. Correct the pH first.

Ignoring the heat pump until it fails. The cost has already been paid in electricity over years before the failure shows up.

Never measuring hardness. It is the most neglected parameter in pool treatment, and in Setúbal one of the most important.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Setúbal's water hard?

Mains water hardness varies with the source and the supply zone, and in the Setúbal and Palmela region high readings are common. The figure that matters is the one from the tap you fill your pool with: measure it once and work with that number.

What is the ideal calcium hardness in a pool?

Between 200 and 400 mg/L. Below 150 the water becomes aggressive to concrete, grout and gelcoat. Above 400 deposits begin; above 600, dilution becomes necessary.

Does a sequestrant fix the problem permanently?

No. It keeps calcium in solution and prevents new deposits, but it does not reduce hardness and does not remove scale already bonded to the surface. It is a continuous treatment, not a correction.

Will a domestic water softener work for the pool?

A household softener is sized for domestic consumption, not for filling or topping up a pool of tens of cubic metres. It is not a practical solution at pool volume.

Is hard water bad for the skin?

The usual discomfort in pools comes not from hardness but from a pH out of range and from combined chlorine. If your skin feels dry or your eyes sting, measure the pH first — we covered it in Pool Water Irritating Your Eyes.

Is hard water more of a problem in a saltwater pool?

Yes, because of the cell. The chlorinator plates accumulate scale and lose chlorine output, which shows up as a disinfectant shortage for no apparent reason. Periodic cell cleaning is mandatory in hard water.

Conclusion

Hard water is not a defect in the pool, it is a characteristic of the region's water. It is handled with one measured parameter, three adjustments and one product — and ignored at the price of the equipment.

Key points to remember:

  • Measure calcium hardness. If you never have, it is probably the parameter behind your recurring problems.
  • Working range: 200 to 400 mg/L. Above 600, dilution is needed.
  • In hard water, work with pH and alkalinity at the low end of their ranges.
  • The real cost is in the equipment: exchanger, salt cell, filter sand.
  • Every evaporation top-up raises hardness. At the end of summer the figure is the year's highest.

If you have a pool in Setúbal, Palmela or Azeitão and have never measured hardness, the on-site technical diagnosis includes that measurement and a written opinion on what your water demands. It costs €45, deductible from your first month under contract.
